Speed Monitoring on The Street

Speed Information Device (SID)

Since December 2017, the Parish Council has monitored the amount of traffic and their speed as they pass through Monks Eleigh. The Parish Council bought a dedicated Speed Indicator Device (SID) in 2023. The SID is successful in reducing the speed of traffic passing through the village and produces a report to show speed and the number of vehicles driving through the village.

The SID is mounted on the specially installed posts on the Eastern and Western approaches. It is swapped regularly between the two points. This is to even out the data to allow us to gather a more meaningful average of the speeds of the passing vehicles and the percentage of speeders.

Community Speed Watch

Monks Eleigh has a team of volunteers organised by Chris Eames who regularly carry out Speed Watch in the village, under the supervision of Suffolk Police. The statistics show that their work helps to further reduce the speed of traffic in the village. Volunteers use speed detection equipment to monitor the speed of vehicles.  They are given full training and Hi-vis clothing to keep safe while carrying out the checks. They work in teams of three for about an hour at a time and we are keen to have new volunteers to keep Speed Watch running in the village. If you would like to help, please contact the Parish Clerk.
